Vince,A pair of 6AU4s in the rectification setup does WONDERS for turn on surges. Damper diodes turn on VERY slowly. So, the signal tubes are hot and ready to conduct when the B+ rises.
When slow starting dampers are used, the caps. in a choke I/P filter don't have to deal with the peak voltage of the AC waveform.
Another good thing about damper diodes is their LOW forward drop. 5AR4s are good in the forward drop dept., but damper diodes are BETTER.
