I think you meant you want to try the JJ Kt77 and not KT66...I want to ask you what amp are you doing the tube swap in? The reason I ask is the impeadance for the kt66 and 6l6gc family should be in the 6.6k range and for the el34 it should be 5k and the kt88/6550 is 3.6 to 3.8k.If your running the kt66 into 5k impeadance or less,that would explain a recessed midrange..You can run the el34s into a high impeadance with a little power loss and the kt88s you can do the same into 5k.
The best amps I heard the kt66s in are the heath w5ms and the knight kb85 and the fisher model 100 as well as a mac mc240..the el37 also sounds superb as its a british 6L6.
