Take it from someone who has lots of experience with the 6922 and the 12ax7..Leave your 12ax7 in place. The 6922 tubes can be very troublesome with microphonics and they have a very hard sounding un tube like demeanor IMHO and for what its worth the 12ax7 comes in a lot of flavors and they are perfected for audio.
The 6922 tube does have a high transconductance but I think it would be difficult to use as an input first stage..Thats what turned me off to the 4 tube curcio board that has 6922s and it had decent detail but it no longer sounded like a tube amp.I have an allen wright preamp that uses the 6922s as a ccs and the preamp tubes that I had built from his book and his design is one of the few I have seen that actually worked well with it but still was very touchy as far as microphonics with the tubes.
