It is possible that there is an open ground in the audio cables or the input jacks on the power amp. Try connecting a jumper wire from the preamp chassis to the power amp chassis. If you are certain that the speaker negative is ground you could connect the jumper there.A ground loop will cause hum as well but you should have found that by lifting the grounds with the cheater.
