I've used 1/4" thick phenolic sheets for amp and pre amp top plates on several occasions. Do all of your machining and cutting outside because of the fumes. I have been told that part of the binder is formaldehyde which is not very healthy. I get 16 by 24 sheets from Lee Valley tools in Canada for about $35. These have a brushed type finish on one side and a matte finish on the other. It's used for tool guards on table saws and routers.
Also, I use smaller pieces for mounting speaker jacks and that works really well on large connector sizes.
