I'm presently using nothing but phenolic. The smell is tolerable. With sharp tools it cuts like hardwood. An additional advantage is that it can be tapped for machine screws.I epoxy 1/16 inch sawn veneer to the outside. It will take spray laquer nicely.
As another poster stated, you will have to accomodate socket mounts by counter sinking etc.
While it's not as non-conductive as PTFE, it is a decent insulator.
The best part is that I have not found a more acounstically dead material (and I've been looking).
