You can build an excellent amp that will exceed most commercial offerings for well under $500 easy. .A single stage, single ended triode amp is all that is needed for most phones. The ECC99 tube is ideal with around a 17/1 transformer for Grado/Sony or a 9/1 for Sennheiser/Berydynamic (Electraprint Audio will build them for you).
DC on the heaters and a well filtered HV (two stage choke works fine) and Bob's your uncle.Tubes $30 ($15 each for the ECC99 and EZ81 rectifier)
Output trannys $200/pair
Power tranny $45 (Hammond, more if you have Jack make them)
Chokes $80
passive parts $15 (more if you go boutique)
Volume pot $30 for a good plastic (less for carbon, more for a switched type.)
