Sparky,

You said good sound and modest expense. Triode wired 6V6 family tubes fill the need. A triode wired 6V6 competes WELL with the revered 6SN7 in the linearity dept.

You can follow the DECWARE SE84 model. A 5965 is excellent to drive the triode wired 6V6 finals. O/P power will be between a 45 and a 2A3.
