Well, after three days of replacing things one at a time and getting nowhere, a lucky look found a tiny amount of solder between the input and the body of the RCA jack. Must have dropped there when I soldered the wire from the jack to the phono pre first stage. Replaced the jack and everything is fine. I keep learning new things, but I keep making new mistakes too!!
