You can snub the self-resonance and circuit resonances of choke input filters with either series or shunt resistances. They each have certain advantages/drawbacks depending on the particular application.Typically, the resistor (as in MG book) is chosen to critically damp the LC ringing. Obviously, you don't want a filter that rings like a bell when stimulated by a load transient. Best to damp it out for a smooth and controlled response.
