Have you looked at Jeremy Epstein's designs? His first was an octal with a pair of 6sl7's and 6sn7's; of which I built a slightly modified version. He than went on to a couple versions using Russian Pi tubes. In his write-up of the latter he seems to poo poo the sonics of the former, but I like the sound of mine in my system better than the EAR and ASUSA phono stages I used before and as much as a Wright Sound I also have.
