Russ

I went through a similar epiphany myself.
I have discovered the less crossover componants
the better the sound whether SS or tubes but
not ALL speakers can handle this simplistic crossover,
you need to find a speaker with a very smooth upper frequency
roll-off so the transition is acceptable and it must have
a nice smooth frequency response through it's enire range
because you are listening to ALL of it.

I am now listening to a pair of DIY speakers that only
have 1 capacitor in the crossover driven by a 10W Mosfet Amp
with PP Mosfet Plate Amp doing the bass.
The sound is airy and clear with great soundstaging.
Michael Bublé sounds like he's in the room.
Not when used with my Carver 100W SS amp though YUCK.
So I will agree with you with one caveat, a MOSFET SS amp.

I do have a SE KT66 amp that is next on bench for
assembly since I just got my Silk OPTs for them.
Since the preamp is a 12B4 directly coupled to a battery powered Monica 2, I'd like to keep it tube oriented for cosmetics.
I don't expect to have a great change in sound when I do this.
But I have been wrong before ...

BTW the capacitor is a 5uFd GE 97F motor run capacitor
bypassed with a nice .1 Vitamin Q capacitor.
It is an open back with a Dynaudio D260 and a Audax Aerogel 5.25"
in parallel with a Audax Aerogel 4" - they work GREAT together.

My next try at speaker building is an Audax HM210X0 in a
transmission line and a HiVi soft dome tweeter (shown above).
I can't use metal dome tweeters because they give me
a headache with their ringing for I still hear above 20KHz.
People keep saying that your hearing gets more limited as
you grow older but at almost 50 - I am still waiting 8^D.
