I agree with Chris O, a lack of bass slam does not normally make me think of the operating point as the culprit, at least in a preamp.

I have not played with the 27 much, but have played with its relatives, the 37, 56, and 76, and now the 26. My view is to run a decent amount of current through them -- your 4 ma would qualify -- and have an operating point that can handle your input signal without clipping. I would gravitate toward your 150v set up myself.

Although it has no bearing on your bass slam, how are you powering the heater? Series connected AC from a 5V winding?
