Hi, that was exactly my point. The implication of you comment:

"But 10 watts driving a pair of 89 db speakers in room gives 99 db. And that is with *no preamp."

was that you could somehow by adding a pre-amp you could get more that 99dB using a 10W amp and 89dB/W speakers. A pre-amp here would make no difference to the maximum level - 99dB is the maximum you can ever get with 10W & 89dB/W speakers. Yes, you will get more gain, but gain in not the same as Watts, and as you say, you will only burn it off in teh attenuator, which will increase noise amongst other things.

BTW, most systems have *way* too much gain in my opinion.
