I liked the stock HF20s better than Mac40s

Unfortuneatly my pair are in very bad shape with one unit wired all wrong so I didn't listen to them stock for long, just enought to know I found a diamond in the very rought. It was a good sounding Williamson circuit,above average sound compaired to other vintage.

But converted to 6B4Gs with the Sowter 8920 input phase splitter, these rust buckets have very nice sound. Powerfull and detailed with some warmth, maybe not as much warmth as SE amps, more so than the Nor'Easter. All in all a very nice balance of tone and power with ease of ownership and construction.
