I faced that same dilemma awhile back and ended up with a Teac W-806, pretty much the only reasonably priced dual-recording deck I could find. At first I thought it was poorly made but I have since changed my mind. It doesn't have the features of my Sony WE 835, which I fixed up rather than abandoned, but it sounds fine, better in some respects than the Sony but different.
