The avaliability of blank R2R tape is iffy and it's future doubtful. However, pre-recorded tapes made prior to 1966 are very good HI-FI and Doc Bottlehead and others are trying to revive it albeit at very high prices for a single tape. The Revox-Studer Company of Switzerland is still in business and you can get tape heads for any of the Revox machines. Custom heads are also expensive but can be had from JRF Magnetics. I'd avoid all other Japanese machine except for the Techniks RS1500 or the Otari MX5050. You also need to think about two type of Equalization; NAB and CCIR-IEC. The NAB EQ for the pre-recorded USA tapes and the CCIR_IEC for European or newer tapes. The Swiss machines and the more modern Japanese machines will accomodate both.
