Although you never mentioned it, my guess is that you're talking about cassette tape.If that is the case, then yes, there was a big difference in long-term high frequency retention among various formulations. Most "serious" listeners figured that out about 10 or 15 years ago.
In any case, good reel-to-reel and CD are much better than cassette.
