I've owned Akia, Teac, Tascam, Tandberg, Ampex (300, 351, 354, ATR-700, and an ATR Services ATR-102), 3M, MCI and Scully. The Scully's are hard on tape, but are built like a friggen tank underneath. The Capstan motor weighs somewhere around 10 or 15 pounds alone! The drive motors are 5 or 6 inches across and 5 or 6 inches deep. It's heavy duty overbuilt American ...
Anyway, I'd rate the ATR Services ATR-102 a distant second to my modified Scully's.
