Re: What R2R brands are appreciated most by critical audiophiles and why?

My Revox A77 Mk III which I bought new, circa 1978, is still great. If you get one that needs new brakes, you need to find a Revox specialist, because the average deck repair guy will screw it up and you'll be spilling and stretching tape. Steve Smith in Nashville did the work on mine, and it's tip-top.

Also, I've worked with the Studer A80 and loved it. Darn near "sexy" look (as machines go), and awesome transport. In fact, if anyone has a good idea on sources for finding one (or an A800), I'd appreciate the tip. (Yes, I know, eBay.) Surely there are other used pro audio sources. Thanks!

Last, the Stellavox SP-7 and it's big brother, whose name I can't remember.

But the old Revox A700, circa 1974, was a dog. WHAT were they thinking?
