static while recording

I am getting static while recording onto my Onkyo TA-2090. Even while the input level is at "0" I get 3db in the left channel. When a signal is present the left goes to max while the right shows movement while totally distorted by static. It plays fine,actually great. I am playing a cassette right now. I bought the Onkyo to tape from my vinyl. Can the recording head be magnitized while the playback head is fine? Or is this anoter issue entirely? Help!!!!!!!Derek.
