TDK MA-R and MA-XG metal tape?

Are we paying more for better tape or just a fancy shell?I was told that the tape inside TDK's MA-R and MA-XG cassette's is the same as the tape inside MA and MA-X? TDK's MA-R is MA tape and the tape inside MA-XG is the same tape as inside MA-X just in fancier shell's.I see MA-R and MA-XG going for as much as $50 apiece on ebay,are they really worth it and do they really sound that much better than there less expensive counterparts?
