I have found that the Maxell XL-IIS tape made in England is inconsistent in quality and sometimes does dirty up the heads more than Japanese made TDK SA-X
I like XL-IIS because of the sturdy shell, but with my decks it does sound 'darker'.
Since both tapes are discontinued, perhaps best bet is to stock up whatever you find.
