The sticky tape syndrome comes from the binder that keeps the oxide on the tape, so non-backcoated tape can have it too. I should say too that the mid-eighties was in the range where Ampex tapes have this problem--at least (notoriously) 406/456, 631 I'm not sure of but I'd be wary.

You'll find out though, just play it for a while or fast wind it and look for the residue. It won't harm the machine beyond what a good cleaning can do...but the tape won't be usable for recording (and only for playback if its baked first).
