Re: ? about Tandberg 74

The 74 is an ok machine but I like the 6/64/64x better. The belts are still available and the pinch rollers can be sent out to be rebuilt. The pinch rollers on these Tandbergs are famous for turning to goo. They use 1 motor, a figure 8 belt and a counter belt. The lazy take up could also be caused by a slipping clutch. They use a cork clutch under each reel table and sometimes they get slick or come unglued. You can cut out new clutch plates yourself if they need it. I have worked on dozens of Tandbergs of that era and I have yet to see one with worn heads. Either the heads are very long lasting or these never got tons of use :) All the things I mentioned about the Tandberg 7 a few threads back apply to this model also as they are very similar transport wise.
They are a very nice sounding deck when working properly.
They do come up on Fleabay time to time and they seem to get anywhere from $25 to $75 for a 74. The 6/64/64x seem to get higher money there.
