I loved DAT machines, I still have a terrific portable HHB that cost over $2k, had great preamps and functionality. But as a recording technology today DAT makes about as much sense as floppy disks....its a tape drive using a complex spinning head transport and ultra-thin tape that, yes, develops dropouts...and holds less than 1.5gb per tape! I mean, you can buy a far more reliable sd card with 20 times that for $15, and a recorder with fairly decent preamps with that card for a few hundred bucks. Pop the card into any laptop for playback and there ya go.
