Do you use those reel holders on your 7-inch reels. I hate those things. There's an Akai substitute that is much easier to use but will not stand up (IME) to repeated use without coming apart. I use the original Otari holders on 10 1/2 inch reels, pretty much out of necessity, but use push-on rubber thingies on the smaller reels. Otari finally got wise on the final version of the MX5050 and started employing reel holders that made sense.
If you're so inclined, You can really upgrade those Otari decks by installing Bottlehead tape path modification kits (replacing fixed tape guides with roller bearings) and -- best of all -- go direct from the repro tape heads to an external preamp like the the better ones from Bottlehead or the deHavilland 222. But even in stock form they're pretty incredible decks, sonically and otherwise.
