I'm probably missing something, but on my MX5050BII, the takeup tension arm has always stayed pegged when playing, and the adjustments in Section VI of the manual (Tape Transport Maintenance and Replacement Procedures) always seemed adequate when my tech makes house calls to tweak things up.
