Home Tape Trail

Reel to reel, cassette and other analogue tape formats.

RE: What the heck?

I would assume that it's mold/fungus. A likely cause is that the tape was stored in fairly high humidity, allowing the mold or fungus to grow.

It's a fairly straightforward process to learn exactly what it is, since every decent size metro area has mold testing labs. They exist partly because of mold issues associated with property insurance claims and renovations. Send a sample of the stuff, they'll analyze it and report back to you. The cost is not prohibitive.

Baking the tapes won't fix the problem - the tapes would have to be cleaned. But it gets worse: if it is mold or fungus and not cocaine, your machine is going to need a couple of thorough cleanings as well, to minimize the transmission of it to your other tapes.

BTW, Maxell UD and TDK LX are both very good tapes.
