Thanks Mike for the detailed reply.
Yes, I agree that a lot of the multichannel stuff is very inconsistent in that most of the time the engineer has his hand to heavy on the center and surround channels in the mix. Most of the pop/rock releases are just laughable with guitars dancing around the room, trumpets blowing from behind you, etc. Most of the classical SACD's from Sonoma/Pentatone/Linn/Telarc's however, are quite believable and do re-create the ambience of the hall convincingly. I think surround may perhaps be the future, but like you, I have migrated BACK to plain stereo for 90% of my musical listening---for now.
You really don't own anything *real world* over there (this a compliment---wow you have some serious stuff!!), so I think your assessment is correct:
For a "normal audiophile" the reel to reel deck @ 15 IPS (or even 7.5 IPS like my Brubeck and Reiner tapes) is going to at a minimum compete with or favorably compare with even 45 rpm vinyl.
I guess we will need to rely on your findings as to whether or not the BEST of vinyl playback can be equaled or bettered by your heavily modded out R2R decks! Please keep us posted!!!!!

Joel
