These were available (at least in Canada) in the early 80's. I still have the cassette and 3 (mini) reels of tape that I still use. However, when old, I noted that the tape may not track straight. Possibly due to tape stretching over time.

The packaging you see is just the cassette cartridge and a take-up reel. You also get 3 reels of tape with it when you buy it as a set. There was no real point in it other than good looks as the Teac tape at the time was pretty decent.
