Subwoofer hum question.

I just picked up a REL Storm III subwoofer at a local thift store. A I only paid 45 bucks for this thing, I didnt really expect it to work. When I powered it up the see if it even came on, I was greeted with a very audible hum that faded to almost inaudible within a few seconds. I have not hooked it up to my system as it requires a Neutrik speakeron cable that I am yet to acquire. As I am electonically challenged, can anyone tell me what might be causing this hum and will it hurt anything. As I say, it fades to almost nothing when I hold my ear up close. The screws on the plate amp have signs of having been removed at one point, so someone has been in there. thanks.
