"Wide" threads due to Big URL's

Is there anything I can do to help me correct the wide thread pages that occur when someone drop in a URL link that contains a couple hundred characters that make the entire thread twice the width as my monitor screen?? Is there anything I could set in my preferences that would abbreviate extra long URL's ? And I'm talking about reading existing posts, not how I can parse a URL that I am posting.
