Re: Merlin VSM with Audio Research

I've heard the various versions of the ARC VT-100 over the years. I tend to prefer the original and MKII versions to the current version which are more "tubey" in character. Having said that, the warmth of the AI M3 is a good match for the VT100MKIII and that combo should work very well on the VSM-Ms. The BAM will work extremely well with the VT100 for a couple of reasons. Besides extending the low frequency response of the speaker several hertz, the BAM's built in high pass filter (which rolls off all deep bass the speaker cannot produce below 28Hz) acts to prevent subsonic information from getting to the amplifier (and the speakers). From the amplifiers POV, the output transformers in your VT100 are not being asked to pass the very low frequenecy information which will reduce the IM distortion of the amplifer.... the amplifier will work easier and sound better.

BTW, since the Chicago show we did a few years ago, Merlin has made a few small improvements to the speakers (the Z-feet and the 6th toe mod) have been made to the VSM-M which provide more relaxed and clearer presentation. We (I say we becuase I was there working for Merlin at that show) used, the Joule Electra OTLs with the speakers at the show, not the Atmasphere OTLs (which do also sound very good on the speakers).
