RE: In light of the Audiogon threads...

A. Money. For development of the web site. Classifieds, auctions, a feedback system. Forums. There's no question that it can be done much better than Audiogon. The developers of Audiogon are either stuck using very old techniques or else they're just plain amateurs. From a user perspective the site has almost nothing going for it.

B. Time. Expect even a slow web site to require a lot of time in management and conflict resolution.

C. More money. You have to be in it for the long run or don't bother to begin with. It will take a long time - years - to get any significant traffic, if it catches on at all.

Expect continued development costs that dwarf those of initial development as users provide feedback and explain how the web site actually needs to work. You won't get it right the first time.

D. Participation of dealers. Unfortunately, the ones that are most available are the ones who've been thrown off Audiogon. Given how sleazy Audiogon is, that's really saying something. You have to really do something blatant to multiple customers or else piss off the douchebags that run the web site itself. The ones that remain on Audiogon are a mix of OK (doing what they need to make a living) and scumbags operating under the radar. Enticing them when they're so closely protected by Audiogon will be difficult.

E. Traffic. Without significant buyer traffic, even a free web site is a waste of time for a busy dealer that has to take the time to post listings on your site. It won't take too many listings without a sale to discourage them. How do you get traffic? See D. Or advertise. Paying money to advertise a web site with no revenue generally doesn't work out well.
