Long ago I bought a Supratek Syrah preamp. Wonderful sounding piece. I still have it, but it's mothballed. The 2 boxes take up a lot of space and need plenty of air around them for cooling. Ask me how I know! Anyway, first thing I did was buy a set of NOS tubes for it (it uses lots of $$$ tubes) from the now sadly departed Charlie Kittleson at Vacuum Tube Valley. Among the tubes I bought was a pair of RCA 6SN7's. They lasted a pretty long time, but when they went south I replaced them with new production Tung Sol's (It was 2 babies later and the cost of NOS's was now prohibitive). I have to admit I didn't hear much difference, and those RCA's were, according to Charlie among the best available at the time. If I were to fire it up and it needed replacements I don't think I'd go for NOS 6SN7's again. I will say though that the difference between the complete retube, a 5AR4, 5881's, 417a's, 6GK5's, and the 6SN7's from the stock tubes Mick supplied was astonishing.
