Single Ended Triodes (SETs), the ultimate tube lovers dream.

Nothing really compares with DHTs.

A few basics here:

1. Only a fully DHT amp will give you the particular sonics of DHTs. Once you use any indirectly heated input tubes - 6SN7, 12AX7 or whatever - it isn't a fully DHT amp, it's an indirectly heated amp with a DHT stuck on the end of it. This makes a big difference.

2. DHTs at their best - with the right filament supplies and preferably with filament bias and no cathode bypasses - have a special transparency and vitality. They are particularly good at voices and reproducing the correct acoustic timbre of orchestral instruments. Once you hear the difference it's addictive and you don't want to go back to indirectly heated tubes. And as above, DHTs need to be used right through the amp to hear the full DHT sound.

3. As above, if you like the particular sound of DHTs you will only want to use them. But it's possible as Vinnie says to like other kinds of sounds. That's up to the individual listener. It's also a question of what the program material is - electronic sounds may be less critical than acoustic ones.
