Not to tread on your post but I've used SET amps in my main system for over 15 years and have run through a long list of amps using the various triodes and to my ears, while every amp offered a different sound and presentation, I found that each triode had its own distinct signature sound that most SET folks could discern, even blindfolded. Perhaps you could fudge the sound a bit through the driver stage but the characteristics of each tube will come through in my experience.BTW, I completely agree with the rest of your post.
