I think the biggest problem with passives is that the crappy little op-amp at the output of (most) CD players does not drive a passive well. You put a real line driver in place of the op-amp of that CD player and things change. This is essentially what you are doing with a "buffer" or pre-amp, and that is fine. It is just more fine if you get rid of the op-amp in the first place.
