No, your point is right on the mark.

One can criticize everything from the objective point. But if an objectively flawed system conveys the emotion of music best, then down with objectivity. This philosophy, which is shared by many high end audio enthusiasts, does not give a clue to a DIY person how things can be improved.

There is another philosophy that provides some guidance: making things simpler and more linear.
