In my Super X I was listening to Tung Sol 2A3's with GE 5v4G (or occasionally the Sovteks (good value)), but now I've switched to 45's with a GE 5star 5y3GTB rectifier, and I doubt I'll be going back to the 2A3's (except for perhaps a rowdy party, when I need a little more gain.) The 45's just bring out something special in the music--perhaps the texture of the sound? I know it's a cliche, but it really does sound like another veil has been lifted off the speakers, giving a more transparent sonic view of the real time/space event.I'm using N.O.S. National Union 45's, but I also have a pair of old globe 245 tubes. They have some nice qualities, but they lack the spacial depth of the ST tubes, and they sound flabby in the bass. I have no idea if this intrinsic to globes in this amp or if they are just weak and on their last legs.
