I hooked up my multimeter to the speaker terminals and was able to find the minimum level much more accurately that way. It turns out that the adjustment is very sensitive, a fraction of a turn results in a change of several millivolts. At the 8 ohm posts I was able to get the levels down to just under 3mv for one channel and 7mv for the offending channel. Since my speakers have a nominal impedance of about 6 ohms I switched to the 4 ohm posts. Here the hum levels were about 2mv and 5mv.
Fine tuning the adjustment and switching to the 4 ohm output brought the hum level way down, now I have to press my ear up tight to the speaker to hear it.
The discrepancy between the 2 channels indicates that there is still some kind of issue though. I will check out the connections next time I have the chassis open.
