Re: Effects of prolonged storage?

Hi,

Amps do not like being left to idle. Most of the time, however, they will be fine switching on, even after 10+ years. But you might never know, if one of the electrolytics had enough of sitting without charge. when lytics are not charged, they start to decompose. They do need the charge to keep them vitalized. Once this process goes beyond a certain point, the voltage will strike through the weakened areas. If this happens through sufficient layers, the cap will be destroyed.
Generally, the rule is to bring the item to rated voltage over a period of 1 hour per month left without use.
In cd/dvd players, the electrolytics also undergo the same process, and the belts might extend and deform, if not in use, and the motors might corrode. speakers can take idling very well. The only issue is damage to the cone from humidity..

good luck,

Janos

PS; 6mo should be fine, though....... I never had problem with so short idleing with tube amps.
