I agree, the preamp is crucial. ARC definatly has something special. I have been on a preamp quest the last couple years and have ended it with Audio Reseach products. My first tube pre was a CJ PV-10. Nice but kinda thick and slow. I tried a Curcio modded pas, which I used for 2 years and really enjoyed. I then tried a Bottlehead Foreplay with full mods. Loved it. Was really great with my homebrew 45 amp. A step up. I then tried an ARC LS-7 and found the sound I was looking for. Open detailed, and 3d out the ass.
I am working my way up the line. Currently using an LS-15.
Reference line hopefully someday.
