Single Ended Triodes (SETs), the ultimate tube lovers dream.

If an audio chain had only two states - "working" or "broken" - then the weakest link theory would be useful, as it is in a ship's anchor chain.

In acoustics there is a tendency to pay a lot of attention to the Pareto Principle, and work on the worst problem first. The logarithmic nature of the hearing mechanism encourages this. But in fact, the most effective place to work on a problem is the one with the best benefit to cost ratio. Changing caps is a LOT cheaper than hiring excellent artists and buying a set of recording, mastering, and production facilities so you can get better recordings. So, it only takes a small improvement to justify searching out a better cap, if that's the part you can change easily.

I'm a circuit designer, so I find it relatively inexpensive and worthwhile to work on that part of the system. Fortunately the internet provides us all the opportunity to benefit from each other's research - I watch this and other forums partly find out what caps etc. are worth using, without devoting all my time to exploring that particular question.
