Switches that handle high voltages without arcing and self-destruction are rare and expensive. Usually they are vacuum relays. You do NOT want your fingers on the metal parts of a switch while it destroys itself with 1000 volts on it!!!Fortunately, tungsten and thoriated tungsten filaments are not subject to poisoning the way oxide filaments are. That is in fact the reason high voltage tubes use these materials, which are otherwise less efficient emitters.
