Single Ended Triodes (SETs), the ultimate tube lovers dream.

Excellent review - but a thought or two

Thanks for such an informative and interesting review.
It's especially relevant for me as I'm currently tuning up my DIY
300B SET, with some similar issues.

My main thought is this; how well run in is your amp?
Mine has changed very substantially over the last 6 weeks. I have
not done any component or circuit tweaks, even though I knew the
sound wasn't right, as I expected things to change.
Well I'm pleased to find that things have changed, and my problems
have pretty much gone away by themselves ... though I do intend to
try some tweaks when I get round to it.

Your metallic edge to the sound could well be due to some caps that
have not yet run in - especially Black Gates, which I find need about
10 weeks. Now swapping out the BG's (too early!) may fix the problem,
but may not give the best ultimate results?

I've also tried VA and TJ mesh 300B's, with similar results; the TJ's
are altogether more refined, and I also seem to have to play with
the 6SL7's. However, I think the TJ's needed to run in quite a bit,
though this is confusing as the amp has been running in a lot.
Anyway, at first, the TJ's were more refined but something was
missing from the sound - the VA's seemed to make more music and
would play louder whereas with the TJ's the sound became muddled
at anything other than low volume. This has now changed and the
TJ's are making music, as well as sounding refined.

So I guess it might pay to ensure the TJ's are fully run in before
doing too much fine tuning of the sound? This seems to be working
for me.

Anyway, you're evidently getting great sound, and fixing the problems.
Great fun, isn't it? :-)
