Taken to the extreme you'd have a room shaped like a silo. That's the worst possible shape because 1) the width and length are the same, and 2) all sound focuses to the center of the room. Focusing is bad, the opposite of diffusion which is good. So for bass problems, corners are the first place to consider, followed by the rear wall.
