RE: I want an Acoustically "Taller" ceiling, can I use rigid fiberglass/acoustical tile?

Hello Ethan,

Thank you for such a detailed post, it is interesting.

I asked the local building inspector about this today and was told that as long as the walls are covered with sheetrock up to the ceiling, I can have "whatever" on the ceiling, as long as there is not an adjoining "apartment", or other adjoining room (Multi-family Residential, or Commercial).

I guess I don't do enough residential (I'm an electrician), as I know in commercial, (including apartments) the ceiling needs to have a fire rating.

So, now it looks like a plan in filling between the joists with rigid fiberglass, and using the fabric on the outside.

What would you recomment as a fabric, the GOM stuff is quit expensive..

What would you recommend and what thickness for the rigid fiberglass?
Should I use a layering of 703 and 705, or what would you recommend?

I do appreciate your responses very much.

Rick
