Should be ok. While in its day it was a great piece, by today's standards I don't think it's up to what you want - but should be good enough to let you see how great vinyl sounds. A more modern phono stage like the PS GCPH would certainly be better - but like you say, you want to invest as little as possible. I think you're fine - you can't go wrong for $50.
